MEMO FROM NARA
We, the human beings are
surrounded by umpteen numbers of problems of diverse nature. In fact, we face
them each and every day. Some of them are serious and others are not so
serious. These two types of problems create on the one hand unhappiness and on
the other hand opportunities. So problems need not be always difficulties but
they may open new ways of life. If you are young with mental stability and
health you do not bother about those problems. But if you are old, say above
70-years, whatever may be the seriousness; problems become real problems
because older people have reduced mental strength. So they do not talk about
such problems. But they suffer within themselves. Every problem is a threat to
them. They are invariably afraid to face problems and solve them. In the real
sense, those problems are not threats. They are challenges in one’s life. There
is no one in this world without those challenges. Life is to face challenges.
Some we ignore and some we face and solve.
Even if we live in peace within a
comfort zone, the problems that surround us may create certain amount of
displeasure and unpleasantness for a short while may be a better solution.
Making little problems bigger is one of the characters we all posses. If we
don’t exaggerate them, then everything becomes normal and peaceful.
As an individual or as a family
we come across unexpected problems at times. Finding a suitable solution to
those problems is the sensible way of handling them. First try to understand
the problem and its cause. Analyse the root cause of it and give sufficient time to think about various
ways to get solutions. You may come out with some possible or an impossible
solution. That would be the first step to solve problems. Peace and patience
can solve many problems. Sometimes time can also solve problems. What we need
is calmness and mental strength.
To make our life happy or active
we need to have problems. Otherwise we will become lazy and lose the capacity
to think. We all know for sure that humans are thinking animals. So problem
solving requires patient thinking followed by appropriate actions. There is no
life without problem. So let us face them.
DEEP-SEA INTERNET CABLES
Only
1% of the world’s data moves via satellite, the rest is carried through cables.
Deep-sea cables must be extremely strong to survive cuts, nicks and bites from
marine vessels and creatures, besides cyclones. They should withstand extreme
pressures at places where they lie miles under the surface of water. To achieve
that strength, a deep-sea cable is largely made up of
steel wires that play no role in data transmission. The real job
is done by a very thin core of fibre.

TIPS FOR HAPPIER LIFE
1. Don’t worry. Worry is the least productive of all human activities
and thoughts.
2. Don’t let needless fears preoccupy
your life. Most of things we fear
never happen!!!
3. Don’t hold grudges. That is one of the biggest and most unnecessary
weights we carry through our lives.
4. Take on one problem at a time. It’s the only way to handle things anyway; one by one.
5. Don’t take your problems to bed with
you. They are bad and unhealthy
companions for good natural sleep and rest.
6. Don’t take on the problems of other
people. They are better equipped to
handle their own problems than you are.
7. Don’t live in the past. It will always be there in your memories to enjoy. But
don’t cling to it. Concentrate on what is happening right now in your life and
you will be happy in the present and not just the past.
8. Be a good listener. It is only when one listens that one gets and learns
ideas different from ones own.
9. Do not let frustration ruin and rule
your life. Self pity more than anything
interferes with positive actions with moving forward in our lives.
10. Count your blessings. Don’t even forget the smallest
blessings. As many small blessings add up to large ones.
JUST TO LAUGH
Once a Chinese man came to Goa for
holidays. At Airport he hired a taxi to take him to Panjim. On the way he sees
a bus He said - "The buses here are so slow and noisy .. In China the
buses are very fast." At Cortalim Bridge the Chinese sees a train passing
by on the railway bridge the other side...he says – “the trains here are so
slow...in China the trains are very fast.
All the way the driver kept silent and drove to Panjim. Chinese
man gets off the taxi and asked for meter readings.
Driver: “Rs.5000/-“
Chinese: “Rs.5000/- ? Are you kidding? Your buses are so slow,
the trains are so slow...if everything else here is so slow then how come the
meter of your taxi is so fast?”
Driver: Because the meter is made in China.
Driver -" Because the meter is
made in China.

MEMO FROM NARA
According to me hospitals are temples for most of us and doctors are our
Gods and Goddesses. We depend on them for getting relief from all kind of
simple to dreadful diseases. The only way we get rid of our diseases is the
hospitals run by the Government or private persons. The service of the doctors
in government hospitals is free whereas we have to pay for consultancy,
check-ups, tests, medicines, operation etc. in private hospitals. Only rich
people can think of such hospitals where all facilities are available.
Big cities have multi
speciality hospitals as well as speciality hospitals. Renowned doctors are being
appointed in them. Invariably such hospitals are owned by a doctor or his/her
family. On the other hand, Government hospitals are poorly maintained and they
serve the needs of poor people who cannot pay for treatments. Although each
Government spends huge sums of money for upgrading such hospitals with modern
equipments and clinical laboratories, the upkeep and maintenance is not up to
the mark. So the upper class people do not prefer to visit them. Therefore the
VIPs and the rich, even many middle class people prefer private hospitals for
better (?) treatments.
Why the Government
hospitals are so poorly maintained in spite of the allotment of sufficient
funds by the Governments? Is it because of the lethargic management or the
corrupt officials and doctors who do not have an aptitude to develop these
hospitals? There may be many more reasons. Still the improvement is very slow although
we do find very little change over time.
Private hospitals charge
heavily from patients who are expected to pay in advance for every type of
treatments. Tests of all kinds, treatments of all sorts extending from
medication to surgery, accommodation (air-conditioned with all facilities) food
etc. cost a lot for every patient. With all these the percentage of success in
treatment depends on the fate of the patient - some people think. Diseases are the enemies of
human beings. In addition to diseases, many other incidents make man
non-functional. So we have to have hospitals to treat us whenever needed. As we
all are human beings – rich or poor – need the help of doctors who run the
hospitals.
Insurance helps to some
extent the hospital expenses. But there are millions of people who do not have
life-insurance. They suffer a lot because of want of money. All these things
are visible once we visit a public or private multi speciality hospital. If we are in good health,
there is no need to be hospitalized, but is it possible to be healthy all the
time? Accidents occur every time. We may be the victims of such accidents.
Soldiers fighting in borders get bullet injuries, and occasional bomb blasts,
road accidents, earthquakes, cyclones, floods cause physical injuries that need
treatments in hospitals. So multi speciality hospitals are necessary in each
and every part of our country to take care of us.
As the days go by we may
have to have more multi speciality hospitals because of new kinds of more
dangerous diseases. Our future generations also have to depend on hospitals
more than us.

OCTOBOT
The Octobot, less than three inches wide is the world’s first completely
soft, autonomous, and untethered robot. It is free of wires, batteries, and any
hard material – like its namesake, the octopus, which has no internal skeleton.
Robert Wood and Jennifer Lewis, the engineering professors of
Harvard University tried more than 300 designs before they came up with one
that worked. Soft robots provide a safer solution. “If they run into something
it’d be like bumping into a basket ball. It won’t hurt you.
The internal circuit triggers chemical reactions, turning into liquid hydrogen
peroxide fuel into a gas, which inflates the robot’s limbs and allows them to
move. The whole assembly is created from silicone using a 3-D printer.
Soft robots could be made from biocompatible and bio degradable
materials and might even be formed into capsules to be swallowed for more
effective and less invasive endoscopies.

JUST TO LAUGH
An American tourist in London wanders around, seeing the sights and occasionally
stopping at some small pub to have a pint of beer. After a while, he finds
himself in a very nice neighbourhood with stately residences. No pubs, no
restaurants, and worst of all no public restrooms. However, he really has to pee, after all
those pints of beer. He finds a narrow side street, with high walls surrounding
the adjacent buildings and decides to use the wall to solve his problem.
He is tapped on the
shoulder by a London Bobby, who says, "Sir, you simply cannot do that
here."
"I'm very sorry,
officer," replies the American, "but I really have to pee, and I just
can't find a public restroom."
"Just follow
me" says the Bobby. Then he leads the American to a back delivery alley to
a gate, which he opens. "In there," points the Bobby, "whiz away
sir, anywhere you like."
The fellow enters and
finds himself in the most beautiful
garden he has ever seen. Manicured grass lawns, big fountains, sculptured
hedges, and huge beds of flowers.
He relieves himself
immediately. As he goes back through the gate, he says to the Bobby "That
was really nice of you. Is that what you call English hospitality? "
