FATHER'S DAY

Her father William Smart was a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent. Dodd wanted to set aside a day to honor fathers like her own and proposed the idea of Father’s Day to local leaders in Spokane, Washington.

The idea of Father’s Day quickly gained popularity and was celebrated in various ways across the country. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday in the United States.

Today Father’s Day is typically celebrated by spending time with fathers and father figures, giving gifts, and expressing gratitude for their love and support. Many families gather for special meals or activities, and children often make hand- made cards or gifts for their fathers.
