MEMO FROM NARA

‘Being alone is a curse.’Is it true? If we think on this statement seriously and try to counter argue I feel, there are a number of advantages of being alone. It gives us certainly good opportunities to think feel and know. One can try all sorts of new things without others’ interference. Our personal strengths increase. It enables us to put aside excuses for taking responsibility for ourselves. Many feel that it is always better to live alone instead of having an unfaithful partner.

There are millions of men and women lead their life alone independently with happiness and satisfaction. Mostly they are successful in life. They achieve great things in life because they feel independent and free. They do what they want to do, good or bad. They learn from what they do and enjoy doing what they want to do. Since, in our world every individual has developed a habit of having his or her own view point; it becomes difficult to depend on others. Thus taking decisions and feeling good all alone is the best way to achieve happiness and satisfaction in life.

In fact, we get many of life’s basic satisfactions by ourselves. When we brush our teeth, shave our beard, take bath, drink water, read a book or newspaper, go for a walk, study for an examination, prepare for a lecture, we do not need someone else’s company for these experiences to be enjoyable. Thus the list of pleasure and satisfactions that we can enjoy when alone is endless. Such a list indicates that most of the gratifications are accessible to us whether or not we are with someone else. Listening to a good music, gardening, jogging, a hobby, learning a language or painting, travelling to far-off unknown places alone make us happy and help us to experience life with pleasure. Such an enjoyment is experienced by everyone who is alone.

At the same time, the statement stated as the opening sentence of the memo –‘being alone is a curse’ is also true to some people who like to depend on others like the relatives, friends and subordinates. These people do not know how to enjoy their loneliness. They feel that loneliness is something like risk taking. Someone is always needed to help them when they are in trouble. Also they think that they need a group of supporters around them to approve what they say or do as the politicians and social or spiritual gurus. Those people who support the above statement like to derive pleasure and satisfaction at the cost of others. At the same time they cannot have a simple life and self-confidence as the ones who like to live alone.

If you analyze the statement, both the groups of people who are for and against it may face hard times in their life. But at the same time, each group will feel certain advantages and disadvantages. That depends on their mind-set and their way of making their life positive or negative, independent or dependent, simple or complex. Let us not forget, many men and women are forced to lead a life alone. Therefore, it is our duty to decide how to derive pleasure and satisfaction whether we live alone or otherwise. So being alone may not be a curse in the modern world provided one is engaged in some activity of one’s interest.

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY

Do five of those things every single day. Give a hug. Get a hug. Kiss a child, read a book, play a practical joke, or sing in the shower. Eat a cookie, exercise or meditate. Whatever makes you happy, do five of them every day, without fail. Sure, it takes some discipline, but you're worth it!

Be productive every day. Do some actual work. Do some productive, meaningful work every day. Get things done. If it's related to your career and makes you money, great! Do something productive, important, and meaningful. Make a difference every day.

Do a good deed. Give someone a hand, or make a phone call. Send a thoughtful card or an encouraging email. Help an old lady cross the street or help a child with their homework. Give of yourself in a way that makes the world a better place for someone else.

Laugh out loud. Life's a crazy, ridiculous affair and there is certainly much to laugh about. If nothing else, just look in the mirror! Tell a joke or hear one. And don't just chuckle politely. Be insane! Be daring and actually laugh. Put your whole body into it. Laugh out loud! I think you'll enjoy it.

Be grateful. Every day, write a few entries in your gratitude journal. Before bed, take a moment to notice what went right, what you're grateful for, the good luck or blessing or joy that touched you during the day. Write it down in a notebook so you can keep track.

LIVE YOUR LIFE

Too many people are living a life that is not theirs to live. They live their lives according to what others think is best for them, they live their lives according to what their parents think is best for them, to what their friends, their enemies and their teachers, their government and the media think is best for them. They ignore their inner voice, that inner calling. They are so busy with pleasing everybody, with living up to other people’s expectations, that they lose control over their lives. They forget what makes them happy, what they want, what they need….and eventually they forget about themselves. You have one life – this one right now – you must live it, own it, and especially don’t let other people’s opinions distract you from your path.

RE-USE

A great way to help the environment and reduce your carbon footprint is to reuse items. There are two ways to reuse items. Reusing them for their original purpose, such as ziploc bags, tinfoil, plastic utensils etc. and finding new uses for things you already own. By doing this you are not consuming any more of the world's precious resources. If you can't reuse something of your own, purchasing something second hand instead of brand new is another way to reduce your consumption of resources.

JUST TO LAUGH...

Wife: See that man drinking over there?

Husband: Yes, who is he?

Wife: He proposed to me twenty years ago and I rejected him.

Husband: My God, he is still celebrating!

John: I’d say that intelligence is like underwear.

Mathew: Why’s that?

John: That’s because even if you have it, you should never show it off.

Patient: “Doctor, what I need is something to stir me up – you know something to put any medicine like that in this prescription.”

Doctor: “No! But you’ll definitely find it in the bill.”

THE POWER OF IDEAS

Ideas, like the air we breathe, are omnipresent. And they are to the mind what light is to the eyes. Everywhere you go and every act you do provides opportunities for useful ideas. Every time you turn on the radio or TV, flip through the pages of your favorite newspaper, magazine or book, ideas are there, waiting to be picked. The moments spent waiting in the doctor or dentist's office and the time spent commuting or computing can be opportunities to garner new ideas. At the same time you're cooking dinner, you can also be cooking up fresh ideas. The point is to be aware of the ever-present opportunities.

The Founder of USA Today, Al Neuharth, said, "Never hesitate to steal a good idea." But don't steal it. Rather, embrace it. Mull it over. Pick it apart and make it your own. That's precisely what every great thinker does. No one originates ideas, but merely refines and reshapes the ideas of others. All ideas are a collaborate effort. So, they are meant to be shared. Yet, when expressing our ideas, we usually do not transfer them to others as much as awaken those already lying dormant in their minds. This is enough of an introduction to the world of ideas and their value.

Realize that the midwives of good ideas are looking, listening, searching, questioning, and pondering. Always be on the alert for hidden treasure. Remain curious. There must be another way, a better way, or an easier way. Look for it and find it. – Chuck Gallozzi

MOTHERHOOD

Successful politicians have thrown up politics, successful editors have thrown up magazine work, successful aviators have given up flying, and successful boxers have given up the stage, but imagine mothers, successful or unsuccessful, giving up motherhood! It is unheard of!  One mother has a feeling that she is wanted; she had found a place in life and has the deep conviction that no one in the world can take her place. – Lin Yutang

MEMO FROM NARA

By 31.12.2012 NARA’S NOTEPAD (NN) has completed its eight years of service. The two-page monthly bulletin was started by me to share thoughts and knowledge with friends, relatives and unknown friends. It was received by men and women of all ages living in all parts of the world. Since, it is published as a blog and also printed in a sheet of A4 paper and distributed month after month; it could reach a large number of people who were looking for inspiration and motivation. Everyone on earth wants to improve their life by adopting a healthy life-style. So NN was helping every individual providing what one needs for their happy life. The feed-back I got from a section of readers was very encouraging – that kept me to work hard to bring out the issues every month without a gap.

Some of my friends who came forward to sponsor the issues were so kind to bear the financial load I incurred for printing the NN. My thanks are for their kind gesture. Any good work to help others certainly is liked by one and all. They come forward to support it. That’s what I got all through my attempt to bring out NN. One of the outcomes of NN was the contact I established and the connection made with all kinds of people. I come to know many people as they come to know me. Knowing each other is one of the great opportunities in life. I could achieve it successfully through NN.

My habit of reading could end up with a good collection of lines I liked. Three thousand lines that inspire and motivate people were collected and published by NN in the form of a beautiful book with the help of my printer Mr. A. Manikandan who taught me the intricacies of printing and publishing. So without going for a professional publisher, I published the book LINES I LIKED PART 1 in October 2012. The book was sold to friends and friend’s friends. It was given as gift to learned people. All sections of people were supplied with copies of this book. Everyone liked the lines I liked and the book served as a reference book for all who have read it. Demand for the book is increasing. Probably I have to go for the second edition!

The Part 2 of the book will be published sometime in 2013. It will also contain 3000 more lines I liked. Thus NN has generated new ideas to go near to people and inspire them to hear the lines I liked. It was my dream for a long time. That has come true with the help, cooperation and blessings of all of you. I wish I will be continuously getting your love and affection. After all, we are touched by others – the human touch that makes all the difference. Respecting others’ point of view, with simple living and high thinking is my way of life. Such an attitude gives me happiness and joy. I wish it will be sustained in the New Year 2013. I wish you a happy and joyful New Year. Let the New Year bring you and your family good health and prosperity.
