HAPPY NEW YEAR

MEMO FROM NARA...

It is the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010. The hope is quite high. After seeing the successes and failures in 2009, we expect for more successes than failures in 2010. Global economic recession, Swine-flu, Climate Change Conference at Copenhagen, Nobel Peace Prize for the President of the U S., the tragic demise of Michael Jackson, Manmohan Singh’s come back, Andhra Agitation are the ones with many others we saw in 2009. Now they are the past happenings. We may forget, but history will not, and records them for future reference. As the population increases, problems of co-existence are also increasing. It appears quite normal. We need more food, more houses, more vehicles, more jobs, and more energy… everything more…! Governments try to meet these ‘more needs’ of human beings. Terrorism is growing and killing of people has become a daily affair. Safety of poor people is threatened in every part of the Globe. Political stability in many countries is at stake. Although we talk of democracy as a solution for political stability, in practice it is not happening. People face innumerable problems. Among them the most important one is the corruption. Injustice to common man is going on in every society in spite of the well built judicial system. Amidst all these difficulties, countries carry on their business of governance. People, who are lucky, enjoy their life and those who are not, suffering. In a society, what can we expect more than this? The movement of people is much more nowadays than the yester-decades. Mixing and crossing of cultures happening every where. The traditional cultures are getting diluted. Western cultures are seeping through the Eastern and Southern cultures. No one can stop it although there are attempts to do so. Explosion in electronic media and technologies has made the world smaller and every human being living in any part of the world is connected. What a progress! We expect eagerly more such interesting technologies in 2010. Will it happen?

JUST TO LAUGH...

A guy walks into a bar and orders two beers. The bartender looks at him curiously. “One’s for me,” the man explains. “The other is for my poor, sickly brother back in the old country. He’s barely hanging on.” The bartender nods sympathetically and pours him two glasses of beer. This goes on for most of the night and the next night, and the one after that. After about a week of drinking two beers at a time—one for him, one for his sickly brother—the man comes into the bar looking particularly downhearted and orders just one beer.
“It’s your brother, isn’t it?” the barman says solemnly.
“No, nothing wrong with him,” the man says, shrugging. “It’s me. I’ve given up drinking.”

Son: Dad, I’m too tired to do my home work.
Dad: Hard work never killed anyone yet.
Son: Well, I don’t want to run the risk of being the first one.

An unemployed was filling up the application for a job, and was not sure as to what to fill in the column ‘salary expected.’ After much thought, he wrote, “Yes.”

3G TOUCH PHONE

3G is the short form for third generation of communications. The actual technical word is High Speed Packet Access (HSPA). The landline wired telephone which started first, is considered to be the first generation of communication. Then came the second generation where wireless took over the wired phone. Mobile phones are also considered as second generation of communication. In both the above communication series, the emphasis was on voice communication. However, in second generation it moves from voice to data but voice still remains the primary function in 3 G i.e. third generation of communication, the major thrust would be on data communication rather than voice. 3G provides high speed of broadband internet on the mobile phone. With that it becomes possible to run every internet driven application on the mobile phone without any hitch. The small mobile screen will replace the computers in many aspects, mobility being one of them. For using the service one just needs a 3G-enabled mobile phone. If one’s existing phone is 3G-enabled, one can use it effectively.

MASTERING TIME...

Time management is a skill that can be learned and perfected. Here are seven quick time management pointers you can use.

1. Don’t waste your time waiting for other people. If you must, find ways to make good use of even a few minutes.
2. Stock up on the small items you frequently run out of or make special trips to purchase, such as postage stamp or greeting card.
3. If possible, buy nonperishable groceries and household goods in quantities to last as long as possible, so that frequent shopping trips are then confined to picking up fresh items only.
4. While attending to essential household chores either switch off the phone or put it on voice mail.
5. To reduce waiting time, make medical and dental check-up appointments well in advance and ask for the earliest morning appointment. If the doctor takes a midday break, ask to be placed first on the afternoon schedule.
6. Schedule the most demanding tasks for when you know you’re at your peak mentally and physically. You’ll work more efficiently and save time.
7. If you need to schedule meetings or appointments that are likely to drag on indefinitely, try keeping them right before lunch or near the end of the business day.
