FACE MASKS TO PROTECT US

It was in 1940s. I was a school kid. My parents had a cow and a calf to meet the requirement of milk and milk-products for my family. The calf was a beautiful little cow. I played with it fondly. The calf unfortunately used to eat the soil. So my mother made a basket out of Palmyra leaf to cover the mouth and nose of the calf like the masks we all wear today in 2020! What we use today as face mask is for protecting us from the spread of coronavirus. It appears the virus enters through our month and nose. What about the eyes? I still do not know whether the virus cannot enter through our eyes. Nowadays we are not allowed to go out without wearing face masks. If we fail to wear one then we are fined sometimes our vehicle is confisticated and a case is filed. It is the government order strictly implemented by the police force, the front-line warriors. I too have one of these masks that was bought by my son some months ago. It was used then against dust. Those who had dust allergy usually wear such face masks. Nowadays it’s mainly for the coronavirus problem. Men, women, children are advised to wear face masks whenever they go out of house.
It’s said that the droplets carrying coronavirus entry into the body is prevented by the face masks. Similarly the exit of the virus through sneezing or coughing is also prevented by the face masks. Such masks are worn by almost all human beings across the world. In the month of March 2020 there was a severe shortage of face masks. Various countries produced large quantities of face masks for export. Home-made masks were also used by many people. Even hand kerchief was used to cover the mouth and nose. Thus the shortage of masks was met with within a short period.
We see various varieties of face masks. Some of them are used by the frontline workers like the doctors and nurses in the hospital. N95 face mask is one of those.
It is costly as compared to the other type of masks made out of cloth or plastic. Generally the ordinary masks cost Rs. 100/- per piece. They are supplied free by many NGOs and political parties. There are disposable and reusable face masks too. Disposable ones are commonly used by health workers. Reusable ones are washed and used by others.
The dress designers have designed face masks to match the dress in various sizes, models, patterns and colors. We have a wide choice to go for a face mask. I saw an advertisement showing a matching face mask with the bikini of a woman. So in future we expect a roaring business for face masks across the globe designed by the fashion world.
One specific thing I noticed after wearing the mask is that the face mask surely masks our face. Sometimes it is difficult to identify our own friends who are known to us for years. Moreover, free breathing is prevented by the masks. Also speaking with a mask on is not easy. It is difficult sometimes to hear what a masked person talks. Covering one’s mouth and nose (as the calf mentioned earlier) looks little bit odd today. But over time people will be adapted to it. All students and teachers going to schools and colleges, office-goers, shop owners and their staff – everyone on earth are going to wear face masks. It may lead to a real social distancing mentally too. It may be good on the one hand whereas it may be bad for our relationships with other human beings. Since we have to learn to live with conoravirus indefinitely (?) we have to live with our face masks too! - NARA

WAYS TO KEEP YOUR CREATIVITY HIGH

When stressed or blocked it is wise to make a change so that we don't stay in that place. Yet, many times we forget some of the simple things that we can do for ourselves, quickly and easily to bring our inspiration back and increase our creativity.
1. If you usually type your first drafts, hand write them. Nothing compares to the feeling the ink melting into the paper and the surge of that creative flow.
2. If you spend too much time at the computer, take a break every hour. Go for a walk or just sit outside in the sun. Even five minutes in a winter sun does wonders for a mood and creativity.
3. Flip through magazines or books. Their colors and ideas will give you sparks and switch your attitude. Blue and green can reduce your stress levels by 30% or more.
4. Add strong smells to the room. Light scented candles around you, visit the fruit isle at the grocery store, or go to a store that is heavily scented. Find an orange or strawberries and smell it. Both will change a mood or create inspiration. Smells awaken your creativity. Smells trigger memories and are a great method to rekindle stories from the past.
5. Go see or rent an inspirational movie. Relaxation time is important. You can even take your notebook and record inspirational phases. Afterwards free write that those phrases bring up from your subconscious.
6. Read a book that stirs you or sparks your creativity. If you prefer, read poetry.
7. Look at bold and bright colors for a few minutes. These change your mood.
8. Talk with a friend about your topic to flesh out ideas and creativity. Record the conversation, with their permission of course, and play it back to hear the little nuances that you might have missed.
9. Write an e-mail to a friend to tell him or her you want to accomplish. If you are stuck, say so and ask for help.
10. Check in with your vibration energy and do something to switch it into high gear. Take a shower. Go for a walk. Turn on some music and dance naked for a few minutes.

DATA SCIENCE

·                  The goal of data science is to improve decision making through the analysis of data. Today data science determines the ads we see online, the books and movies that are recommended to us online, which emails are filtered into our spam folders, and even how much we pay for health insurance. This volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series offers a concise introduction to the emerging field of data science, explaining its evolution, current uses, data infrastructure issues, and ethical challenges.

·                  It has never been easier for organizations to gather, store, and process data. Use of data science is driven by the rise of big data and social media, the development of high-performance computing, and the emergence of such powerful methods for data analysis and modelling as deep learning. Data science encompasses a set of principles, problem definitions, algorithms, and processes for extracting non-obvious and useful patterns from large datasets. It is closely related to the fields of data mining and machine learning, but broader in scope. This book offers a brief history of the field, introduces fundamental data concepts, and describes the stages in a data science project. It considers data infrastructure and the challenges posed by integrating data from multiple sources, introduces the basics of machine learning, and discusses how to link machine learning expertise with real-world problems. The book also reviews ethical and legal issues, developments in data regulation, and computational approaches to preserving privacy. Finally, it considers the future impact of data science and offers principles for success in data science projects.

TRY TO KNOW

WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW

LIE THY NOT

“Don’t lie” was a sensible and golden advice given to me by my dad and mom when I was a child. So also I advised my sons and daughter and it continues generation after generation. In spite of this golden advice, we all lie at one point or other in our life. If I say that “I’m a liar and you are a liar” you may not agree. Still I am sure that everyone lies for good or bad or even for fun. One may lie for a good thing to happen like a marriage or a bad thing like stealing or cheating. A large number of jokers lie to make us happy. So lies are used at various situations.
Actually lies are hiding the truth or facts. A truth has to proved. Almost all criminals lie to hide their unlawful actions. In a court of law criminals are supported by one set of lawyers. In general, lawyers are good at lying. Fifty percent of the lawyers are liars according to me and they try to protect their clients by lying producing false evident and witnesses. Sometimes they are successful too if the judges are not able to find out the truth. Thus in everyday life, we witness such illegal activities.
All of us know fully-well that lying is unlawful and illegal. If one comes late to the class or office one fabricate some sort of lies to escape the punishment. Liars are punished in many ways. Depending on the seriousness of the lies the punishments vary. If a student comes late to the class or not doing the home-work he or she is asked to stand outside the class room till the class is over. Sometimes they are asked to stand up on the classroom bench. Earlier they were even beaten with a stick on the palms of the students. So, students learn that lying is punishable. All of us have undergone such treatments in our life. If one comes late to the office, the superior officer asked for an explanation by issuing a memo. Such explanations were filed to see whether the staff is correcting himself or not. If not his/her promotion was stalled. So lying in this case is costing one’s job.
Some people lie to please others. They may tell some lies about others and get what they want. Believing such lies will land us to unnecessary disputes. The capacity to lie is a talent human beings possess universally. Nowadays we are exposed to fake news in print and electronic media. Such news creates unwanted aspirations in the minds of innocent common people. The peace of mind is disturbed in some cases. Fake news are presented even in social media and people are cheated. It is commonly observed that innocent people are cheated by faulty advertisements too.
Discovery of a lie is a big job of the police department. About that we have intelligence agencies. They keep the liars in custody for months together to enquire and extract the truth by using many physical and mental means. In certain cases ‘lie detectors’ polygraph machines are also used. Volumes of report are written and submitted to the court for further action. We see many such cases with politicians and business people.
Another important source of lies is for entertainments as I mentioned earlier. Jokers’ jokes are nothing but lies to make us laugh and laugh. There are various kinds of jokes we enjoy every day. Even the cinema, stories and novels are a kind of lies. Nothing shown in the cinema is real. All killings, love acts and actions are a kind of lies. Even the buildings, ancient forts, chariots are only settings to suit the story. Stories and novels are simply imaginations of authors who are clever enough to putthings in such a way so that the readers are convinced to believe those lies. We do not say lies, but we call them cinema, story and novel.
Thus lies have become the part and parcel of our life. “Lie thy not” is only an advice or caution for all. To follow it or not depends on each and every individual. - NARA

POSITIVE CHANGES

When you’re in a situation you don’t want to be in, the prospect of making any change at all can be very appealing. Yet unfocused change for the sake of change won’t necessarily bring you forward. When you use your time and energy to make a change, be sure it’s a change that will not move you away from where you are but will also move you to a better place.
Realizing that you need to make a change can be great source of motivation, but in order for this motivation to create positive change, you much apply it toward creating things of value. Don’t fight against what you don;t want; create what you do want. Don’t punish those who have caused you pain; let go and focus on something new that soothes your pain. Don’t focus on what you are running away from give your attention to the great thing you want to create in life.

WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE

1. Give up your need to impress others
Stop trying so hard to be something that you’re not just to make others like you. It doesn’t work this way. The moment you stop trying so hard to be something that you’re not, the moment you take off all your masks, the moment you accept and embrace the real you, you will find people will be drawn to you, effortlessly.

2. Give up your resistance to change
Change is good. Change will help you move from A to B. Change will help you make improvements in your life and also the lives of those around you. Follow your bliss, embrace change – don’t resist it.
“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls” Joseph Campbell

3. Give up labels
Stop labeling those things, people or events that you don’t understand as being weird or different and try opening your mind, little by little. Minds only work when open.
“The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don’t know anything about.” Wayne Dyer

4. Give up on your fears
Fear is just an illusion, it doesn’t exist – you created it. It’s all in your mind. Correct the inside and the outside will fall into place.
“The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.” Franklin D. Roosevelt

5. Give up your excuses
Send them packing and tell them they’re fired. You no longer need them. A lot of times we limit ourselves because of the many excuses we use. Instead of growing and working on improving ourselves and our lives, we get stuck, lying to ourselves, using all kind of excuses – excuses that 99.9% of the time are not even real.

6. Give up the past
I know, I know. It’s hard. Especially when the past looks so much better than the present and the future looks so frightening, but you have to take into consideration the fact that the present moment is all you have and all you will ever have. The past you are now longing for – the past that you are now dreaming about – was ignored by you when it was present. Stop deluding yourself. Be present in everything you do and enjoy life. After all life is a journey not a destination. Have a clear vision for the future, prepare yourself, but always be present in the now.

LOGICS OF PEACEFUL LIVING

1.                Make peace with your past so it doesn’t spoil your present.
2.      What others think of you is none of your business.
3.      Time heads almost everything, give the time sometime.
4.      No is the reason of your happiness except yourself.
5.      Don’t compare your life with others, you have no idea their journey is all about.
6.      Stop thinking too much, it’s alright not to know all the answers.
7.                Smile, you don’t own all the problems in the world.

BRAIN POWER

Play Online. Research has shown that we can better maintain intellectual skills critical to our work performance by giving them a good “workout.” One of the best ways to keep these skills sharp is to play games against the clock, since timed activities force us to focus, think fast and be nimble in our approach. Games we play online tend to be timed and can give our brains a terrific skills challenge. So take a few minutes during lunch or as your schedule permits to get your brain in the game.
Jump Some Jacks. Here’s a tip that’s pretty basic, but packed with brain boosting power. Aerobic exercise is one of the best things we can do for our brain, as it revs up our daily performance and reduces our long-term dementia risk.
