MEMO FROM NARA...

‘How the future is going to be?’ It is obviously a foolish question to ask by a 70-plus-old-person like me. Still I wish to visualize the future life in our planet is quite interesting for everyone irrespective of age and gender. I may not be experiencing the future life but many others who are younger than me will certainly get that golden opportunity. Is it going to be a happy one? One can not say. Probably Paul, the Octopus may be able to predict as it did for the Germany’s foot ball future. Anyway as things move on, one thing appears to be certain is an increase in human population. I think, the number growing in billions is going to be the major problem for the future. Creation of humans by human beings and the advancement in health services will decide about the population pressure. Infrastructure facilities for billions of people all over the world are certainly going to be serious concern. Science and technology are the tools in the hands of humans to solve the problems and make the world happy. The East is copying the West and the West is trying to copy the East. The world will be converging further to connect everyone on the Globe. The distance between continents and nations is going to be narrowed and the culture of one nation will cross with the other to make a hybrid having huge vigor. I believe healthy and strong men and women will be there to make the future happy. Everyone needs food for survival. So food for all has to be produced in farms or in factories!. There will be ways and means to solve the food scarcity. Because of scientific advancement, solutions to problems would be possible in the future world. One of the basic necessities for all is the survival for the fittest. A country with billions of people differed in social status will certainly create chaos and crises which may lead to the question of ‘who is big?’ and ‘who is not?’ Finally fighting between groups of people may be expected. Such fighting probably will intensify terrorist activities that may bring down the intensity of the happiness we expect in future. Still I think there is an answer for every question as there is a solution for every problem.

A tourist stopped a local in a village he was visiting and asked; “what is the quickest way to the lake? The local thought for a while. “Are you walking or driving?” he asked the tourist. “I’m driving.” “That is the quickest way!” the local said.

Rosy reported for her university final examination which consisted of "yes/no" type questions. She took her seat in the examination hall and stared at the question paper for five minutes. In a fit of inspiration, she took her purse out, removed a coin and started tossing the coin and marking the answer sheet - Yes for Heads and No for Tails. Within half an hour she was all done, whereas the rest of the class was still sweating it out. During the last few minutes, she was seen desperately throwing the coin, muttering and sweating. The moderator, alarmed, approached her and asked what was going on. Her reply was, "I finished the exam in half and hour, but I'm rechecking my answers."

A blonde female police officer pulled over a blond woman for speeding. The blonde cop approached the car and asked the blonde for her driver’s license. The blonde driver asked, “What does a driver’s license look like?” as she search through her purse. The blonde cop said, “It’s a little thing with your picture on it.” The driver pulled out her powder compact, opened it, looked in the mirror and handed it to the officer. The blonde cop look in the mirror, handed it back and said, “ If you’d told me you were a police officer, we could have avoided all these.”

Committee is a body that keeps minutes and wastes hours.

Why do only 10% of men make to heaven? Because if they all go, it would be hell.

NOISE POLLUTION

Noise can be defined as unwanted sound. Whether a sound is pleasant or a noise depends upon loudness, duration, rhythm and the mood of the person. The most immediate and acute effect of noise pollution is impairment of hearing, anxiety and stress and in extreme cases fright. Physiological manifestations; increase in the rate of heart beat, constriction of blood vessels and dilation of pupil of the eye.

Loudness is measured in terms of decibels (dB). Just audible sound is about 10 dB, a whisper is 20 dB, and a normal conversation is 35 – 60 dB. Sound beyond 80 dB can be safely regarded as pollution as it harms the hearing system. World Health Organization has fixed 45 dB as the safe noise level for a city.

VIEWPOINTS

K. Alagesan (State President, Tamil Nadu Inter-Caste Married couples Association): The Indian constitution envisages a casteless society. But our social order is basically caste-ridden. The Supreme Court of India has said that the caste system is a curse. The sooner it is destroyed, the better. For that to happen, inter-caste marriage is the only remedy. In fact, such marriages will be in the nation’s interest. Throughout, India, crores of people have married across castes, discarding the oppressive caste system. They relinquish all rituals and practices connected with their castes. They go straight to the Registrar of marriages, get their marriage registered and start to live as man and wife. Their offspring are naturally casteless.

John Moore: Wars have been fought and millions have been killed because of the inability of men to understand the idea that EVERYBODY has a different view-point.

LEADED PETROL

Tetra ethyl lead (TEL) is a killer chemical, nowadays banned in the West for use in car fuel. The colorless and oily liquid is so toxic that workers went mad and died during the first attempt to manufacture TEL commercially, at the Bayway refinery in New Jersey (US) in 1924. American newspapers called it “loony gas.” After that scandal, double-skinned rubber gear and goggles became de rigueur in its manufacture. TEL is the “lead” in leaded petrol: a heavy metal compound to improve energy performance. It was promoted by the oil industry for 50 years, until evidence of childhood neurological damage eventually outlawed it by 2000 in Europe and the US.
