MEMO FROM NARA...

‘Respecting others’ is one of the good characters we find with some people in our society ‘Why should we respect others?’ – is the question asked also by majority of the people in Indian society. Giving respect to others depends on many factors. Elderly people, soft spoken, officers in the service sectors, teachers, ladies and the like are respected, provided they are properly identified. If not, even they do not get the required respect. “A country with more than billion people is going to be a hell in the future” said one of my close friends. True, I imagine. It may happen, but is it not our duty to see that we cultivate certain culture in the minds and behavior of people? Respecting others may not happen that easily because everyone wants the pound of flesh at any cost in the quickest possible time. They do not even respect the law and order for it. They think anything can be achieved with muscle and money! We very often notice jumping a queue in public places. Even in a bank or railway ticket booking counter or paying electricity or telephone bills in post office, people do not follow the simple rules. Everyone wants to be in the front even they join the queue late. Is it a human tendency? Is it an Indian Culture? Is it a prestige? What is it then? Even educated person is not an exception. They do not care for the others who stand in a queue for a long time. Invariably they try to find out the man or woman behind the counter window and try to apply all kinds of techniques to get their work done at a short-cut method. Such activities are not desired in a cultured society. I do not know when we change to change the Image of India?

How come the same Indians adhere to the que culture abroad? Is it by conviction? No. It is due to fear of being caught or fined. Where as in India, the law breakers enjoy all the privileges with impunity. The country is plagued by over dose of democracy in governance for having got independence without a war. Lord Krishna can not be stated as wrong for having advised Arjuna to fight a war to win the empire.

The disease has no barrier. Probably we become more selfish and have no respect for others. This kind of mannerism should be inculcated from the school level, home level. perhaps the teachers and the parents are to be blamed for the downfall. all is not lost , still it can be correcd with concerted efforts by all
