MEMO FROM NARA

We all have the appetite for appreciation in our mind. One gets appreciation only when one does some outstanding deeds. Scoring high marks in examination brings appreciation. Winning in sports, success in carrying out social reforms, curing of diseases, transforming the small towns into big cities, discovering new drugs for human ailments and many like these activities are certainly being appreciated. When we are appreciated by others we are highly elated. We feel happy. So appreciation in fact, brings happiness.

Everyone likes to do something great for getting appreciation. Those great deeds are the ones that pave the way for our progress. Appreciation comes from renowned persons who are socially recognized or professionals of high refute. When the Prime Minister of a country appreciate the efforts of a sports person, it is a great honor. Likewise many of us are appreciated by our immediate bosses to encourage us. Such appreciations are in fact, a stimulant or a shot in the arm for any individual to put all his potential to achieve great things.

Those who got appreciation for their great achievements are remembered for very long time. Mahatma Gandhi who was instrumental for getting us freedom for India is remembered by one and all even today. How can we forget the soldiers who strggle a lot in the uncomfortable terrain to keep our country safe?  They are being appreciated based on their devotion to duty. At the same time some people do get appreciation for non performance. Of course, fortunately such people are not many. Still the human appetite for appreciation is an in-built mechanism. Achievements satisfy the appetite for appreciation.

In order to get appreciation one has to put in hard work. In any profession, hard work brings in recognition which leads to appreciation. One is appreciated by saying ‘you have done a good job’ or by awarding a title or by offering money. There are various ways of appreciating people. Winning gold medals in Olympic Games is appreciated by all. Similarly people who are internationally recognized for their contributions to the society are being appreciated by awarding Nobel Prize every year. Such appreciations are inducements for every individual in this world to aspire for them. They kindle the young minds to think for new avenues and modern technologies to make life easy and happy. The world progress depends on the human intelligence and thoughtful action which are appreciated by appropriate authorities.

Sometimes, unfortunately good work is not being appreciated because of personal enmity and jealousy. It is sad, but we do have such incidences in our society. One who is eligible for appreciation is not being appreciated is unacceptable. How to rectify such undesirable actions? Probably unless we eliminate enmity and jealousy we cannot solve this problem. In other words, people liked to be appreciated have to be friendly with their bosses and at times they have to obey and satisfy their wicked wishes. Do you think the appreciation you want to get this way merit any real value? I think such appreciation is worthless and meaningless.

Whenever we are appreciated or not appreciated, let us continue to perform and pursue our goal set in life. One day our achievement will be definitely recognized and we will be appreciated. That is the optimistic view we have to keep in mind.
