WIKIPEDIA website is based on a wiki engine, that allows users to edit the content. The first wiki engine was written in Perl by Ward Cunningham, for his programming website way back in 1995, and the website was used by programmers for sharing ideas. This was called the WikiWikiWeb. Wiki is a Hawaiian word for “quick”. It simply intended for quick content generation, but between 1995 and 2000, only very few other wiki-based websites ccame out, reaching out to a few people. With the entry of Jimmy Wales, started a wiki based encyclopaedia called Wikipedia, in Jaunuary 2001. 20,000 articles were submitted by the end of the year. It is growing at an exponential rate ever since.
